A post is 280 weighted characters on a standard account and 25,000on X Premium, although a long post still shows only its first 280 in the timeline. A handle is four to fifteen characters, letters, numbers and underscores only, and cannot contain "twitter" or "admin". A bio is 160 characters and a display name is 50.
Those numbers live in one file that every tool on this page reads, rather than being typed into each one separately, because the failure mode of getting it wrong is a free tool confidently telling someone something false. If X moves one, the tools and the copy move together.
Why they run in your browser
Nothing here connects to X and nothing here reaches a server of ours. Partly that is a privacy decision: the text you paste into a character counter is usually a draft that has not gone out yet, and a tool that quietly ships it somewhere has taken something it did not need.
Partly it is durability. A tool built on the X API is one pricing change away from being switched off, and that is exactly what happened to most of the free Twitter tools that existed five years ago. A tool that only needs what you typed keeps working.

How many characters is a post on X?
Two hundred and eighty on a standard account, unchanged since 2017. X Premium raises it to 25,000 for long posts, but everyone scrolling still sees the first 280 with a "Show more" link, so the opening has to work on its own either way. Direct messages sit at 10,000 on every tier.
Are these X tools free?
Yes, all of them, with no account, no email address and no limit on use. They run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us, logged or stored. That matters because most people paste a draft that has not been published yet.
Do these work for Twitter, or only for X?
They are the same platform. Twitter was renamed X in July 2023 and the rules these tools implement, the 280-character limit, the t.co link wrapper, the handle format, all carried over unchanged. We use both names because most people still search for one and use the other.
Do I need an X account or an API key to use these?
No. Nothing here connects to X. Everything is computed from what you type, in your browser, which is also why none of it can be rate limited or priced out when X changes its API terms.
